Extracted jatropha oil preheating using exhaust heat recovery

Abstract

Purpose of this research is to study the influence of extraction procedures on oil properties such as solvent, soxhlet, screw, and hydraulic. This study was established to use the exhaust heat recovery to preheat the oil. The free fatty acid, and properties of jatropha oil extracted using various methods were determined. Free fatty acids are 2.7, 5, 17.6 and 21.1 for screw press, hydraulic, solvent and soxhlet, respectively. Linoleic, oleic, palmitic and stearic fatty are the major fatty acids in the oil. Measured calorific values of jatropha oil for soxhlet, solvent, screw and hydraulic processes were 39135, 38808, 39128, 39201 and 38789 kJ/kg, respectively. For jatropha oil extracted by soxhlet, solvent, screw, hydraulic, and biodiesel methods, the evaluated cetane numbers are 37.53, 37.62, 37.83, 39.12, and 42.62, respectively. As the temperature of the oil was increased, the density and viscosity of the oil were dropped. The density and viscosity of the oil are related inversely to the temperature of the oil. The density and temperature can be determined to have a linear relationship (ρ = -0.5247 T + 923.79). As the temperature of the oil was increased, the viscosity was decreased as a power function (µ = 84.624 T -0.809).
